Douglas resident Joe Gary Dabney died Sept. 24, 2002, at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.
He was born Dec. 14, 1941, in Trinidad, Colo. He graduated from high school and Adams State College in Alamosa, Colo. In 1961, he married Sharlene Massegee at College Heights Baptist Church where they were members. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1962-66.
In 1971, he moved to Juneau to teach at Gastineau Elementary School. He spent many summer breaks commercial fishing and tour bus driving.
He retired from teaching after 26 years. He was a member of Glacier Valley Baptist Church.
His family said he enjoyed traveling in the Southwest and to foreign countries, collecting coins and stamps, and dabbling in the stock market. His most recent interest was the renewal of high school friendships at his 40th class reunion.
He was preceded in death by his father, Joe Gray Dabney.
He is survived by his mother, Faye Dabney of Rocky Ford, Colo.; his daughter and son-in-law, Robyn and Cisco Ramos of Juneau; son Ryan Dabney of Douglas; grandchildren Talyn and Treyson Ramos of Juneau and other relatives including an uncle, aunts and cousins.
A memorial service will be held at Chapel by the Lake on Oct. 20 at 4 p.m. A celebration of life is to be held at Pat's Douglas Inn on Oct. 22 at 6 p.m. Following with his wishes, he was cremated.
