Retire Young, send Benson instead

Recent polls indicate Congress has a 25 percent approval rating, which even reflects on Alaska's 17-term representative.

Sound off on the important issues at

And rightly so. Our representative's behavior has cost him credibility in Alaska and across the nation. He thinks global warming is a hoax. He declared the Exxon Valdez disaster environmental hogwash and has rubber-stamped every lame-brained scheme President Bush has dreamed up.

Don Young has greater-than-average connections with disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff and former House Majority Whip Tom DeLay. And Alaskans disapprove of his arrogance. He's "phoning in" his campaign again this year and doesn't bother to show up for congressional floor votes and hearings of importance to Alaskans. Does anyone ever see, hear or speak to him?

The good news is Alaskans don't have to tolerate his disinterest in us for an 18th term. We have a better choice on Nov. 7 - Diane Benson. Diane is a well-educated, well-known talent with priorities befitting the job. Diane will actually show up and do the work. She'll provide oversight of the president and Congress. She'll work to protect America and its economy. She'll set a strategy to end Bush's sickening, misbegotten war in Iraq and bring our troops home. Diane will not be a part of the Republican majority's blatant corruption and cover-ups.

We retired Gov. Frank Murkowski on Aug. 22. On Nov. 7, let's retire Don and send Diane to work for us in Washington.
