ANCHORAGE - The clerk of U.S. District Court in Anchorage confirms that Republican Senate candidate Joe Miller sought permission before hiring his wife as an assistant when he worked as a part-time magistrate.
Miller was a magistrate in Fairbanks from June 2002 to June 2004. Clerk Marvel Hansbraugh issued a statement Friday confirming that Miller inquired about hiring his wife and was initially advised that it would be OK.
But Hansbraugh says that the chief judge of the district told Miller a few months later that it might violate federal anti-nepotism laws, and in December 2002 Miller terminated his wife's employment.
