JUNEAU - A man was arrested this morning at the Coho Apartments on Amalga Street for allegedly chasing another resident with a hatchet.

Mark Stoinich, 44, was arrested on two counts of felony assault and was lodged at the Lemon Creek Correctional Center.

Police said the altercation occurred after a man, 27, went out to warm his car at about 6:30 a.m. in the apartment complex's parking lot. Police said Stoinich went out to the parking lot to complain about the noise the man's car was making because of its high idle rate. Police said an argument between the men ensued, which escalated to a physical fight. Stoinich went to his apartment and got a hatchet, police said.

Police said Stoinich then approached the man and the man's wife, 28, and held the hatchet above his head as though he would strike them. Police said Stoinich told the man he was going to kill him. The man retreated to the parking lot, police said, while his wife went to a neighbor's house to call 911.

According to police, Stoinich first started following the woman toward the neighbor's house but turned around and began following the man to the parking lot. Eventually Stoinich returned to his residence, police said.

When police arrived, they said, Stoinich was in his apartment. He was taken to Bartlett Regional Hospital for superficial injuries to his legs sustained during the altercation with his neighbor. The husband refused medical attention for minor injuries he incurred. Police did not disclose the names of the husband and wife.
