Juneau-Douglas High School volleyball - Juneau Invitational Volleyball Extravaganza (JIVE Tournament): The Crimson Bears host six teams - Ketchikan, Sitka, Chugiak, Cordova, Petersburg and Mount Edgecumbe - in a two-day tournament that takes place today and Saturday at the Juneau-Douglas High School main and auxiliary gyms. Round-robin pool-play matchups start about 4 p.m. today and 9 a.m. on Saturday. The championship match will start about 8 p.m. on Saturday.

Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation Saturday hike - Meet at 9:30 a.m. at the snowmachiners' parking lot above Blueberry Hill, off Cordova and Jackson Streets in West Juneau. This week's hike is a moderate, six-mile hike with 850 feet of elevation gain to Half Moon Meadow in Eagle Creek Valley off the Treadwell Ditch Trail. Eaglecrest Ski Area season passes - Discounted season passes for Eaglecrest Ski Area are available if purchased before Sunday, Dec. 1. The 2002-03 preseason pass prices, not including tax, are $375 for adults, $255 for youth (grades 7-12), $255 for seniors (age 65-older), $180 for child (grades K-6), $189.52 for midweek and $500 for corporate. Eaglecrest staff members will be at the Nugget Mall on weekends and holidays through the end of November selling passes, or you can stop by the business office at the Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation office (Room 218) at the Municipal Building, downtown. Juneau basketball officials meeting - All local basketball officials need to meet from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School on Wednesdays through Nov. 6. Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation lifeguard instructor class - This class takes place on Friday through Sunday, Oct. 11-13, with a pre-course test given on Saturday, Oct. 5, on CPR, first aid and lifeguarding skills. This class is open to anybody age 17-older who has passed the pre-course written and skills test and holds a current Fundamentals of Instructor Training (FIT) Certificate. Friday's class is from 5-10 p.m. at the American Red Cross Office on Hospital Drive, while Saturday's class (8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) and Sunday's class (7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.) both take place at Augustus G. Midnight Suns Baseball Club tryout - The Midnight Suns Baseball Club is conducting a tryout on Sunday, Oct. 13, to form a competitive baseball travel team for ages 11-12 and 13-14. Age groups are consistent with the requirements for Gastineau Channel Little League, and the player must be in the age bracket as of July 31, 2003. Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation adult basketball leagues - Team manager packets for the men's and women's adult Ordway Basketball Leagues are available at the Parks and Rec office, Room 218 of the Municipal Building downtown. Team registration will take place at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 16, in the Juneau Assembly Chambers. Late registration takes place from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 17, at the Parks and Rec office (an additional $10 fee will be charged for late registration). Scorekeepers are needed for the season, which starts on Nov. 10 and runs through February, and scorekeepers are paid for their time. Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation women's classic basketball - Team packets for the Women's Classic Basketball League are due at the Parks and Rec office downtown (Room 218 of the Municipal Building) by 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 25. This league is designed for women who are a little bit older, new to the game, or have too many commitments to play in the more competitive Ordway League. Preseason practices start in November and games take place on 10 Wednesdays through January. The league costs $47.25 per player (including tax), which covers the player fee, a share of the team fee and a number t-shirt for each player. Juneau Recreational Hockey League registration - With the opening of the Treadwell Arena scheduled for December, the JRHL is being created to give local athletes a change to play recreational hockey in Juneau this winter. All interested players and referees should attend an open house from 5-7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 29, at the Hickel Room in Centennial Hall. This is a coed league for players age 15-older. Players should have some hockey experience and have all the equipment they need to start playing in mid- to late-December. Players will be assigned to teams based on their skill levels and experience. The JRHL is not affiliated with the Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation. Those athletes who have not played hockey before or are interested in youth hockey should contact the Parks and Rec office about clinics and skills workshops that will take place in early 2003. Capital Chevrolet Tennis and Racquetball Tournament registration - Entries are open now for this event, with the tennis tournament to start on Wednesday, Nov. 6, and the racquetball tourney to start on Friday, Nov. 8. These tournaments will both take place at the Valley location of JRC/The Alaska Club. Entry deadline for both tournaments is 10 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 4. Tournaments are open to all skill levels and ages, with singles and doubles events for men, women and junior players. Racquetball players may enter up to three events, tennis players may enter two divisions. Entry fees are $30 for JRC/The Alaska Club members, $40 for non-members and $15 for juniors age 13-younger. Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation lifeguard training class - This five-week class takes place from Tuesday, Nov. 12, through Saturday, Dec. 14, with sessions held from 5:45-8:45 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays and from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturdays at Augustus G. Brown Swimming Pool. The class is open to advanced swimmers age 15-older, and all participants must pass a swim test before enrolling.
