Watching the vice presidential debate Tuesday night, I was pleased to see a real debate between two men who can think and think on their feet. A Kerry supporter, I was gratified the next day to see that the majority of viewers thought that Edwards won the debate. But in my mind I thought that Cheney had the edge, on mostly rhetorical grounds, but also because I think Edwards' relative inexperience showed through. So we got a debate between one man who seems not quite ready to be president and - as seems clear in the comparison to Bush's performance of last Thursday - one man who already is. The Florida debacle of the 2000 election suggests that we didn't elect the man who is president. Nor did we elect the man who is in charge at the White House.
