Rotaract to host Fest for Breasts

Posted: Sunday, October 11, 2009

JUNEAU - Capital City Rotaract invites Juneau to go Passionately Pink for the Cure with the October Fest for Breasts fundraiser to be held at 8 p.m. Friday at the Hangar Ballroom. Cost is $5, which gives access to music by local DJ Shorthand, silent and garter auctions, door prizes and an all-night benefit for breasts: education, research, screening and treatment.

"October Fest for Breasts is an opportunity to spread awareness to both men and women alike about breast cancer," said Amanda Behrends, event organizer for Capital City Rotaract. "We hope to educate and inform people while bringing the community together in a celebration of survival and the fight against cancer."

Alaska women face an estimated 370 new diagnoses of breast cancer for 2009, and an estimated 60 deaths, according to the American Cancer Society. Nationally, that number is 40,170 deaths.

"Rotaract is always looking both local and global," said Armando DeGuzman, president of Capital City Rotaract. "Every woman is impacted by the importance of screening and detection for breast cancer, so our goal is to raise awareness at home in Alaska while fighting breast cancer nationwide."

The October Fest for Breasts plays host to numerous activities, including a live garter auction, special event T-shirts and raffle tickets. In partnership with Rotaract, several community businesses are partners in making the Fest possible. All proceeds go to Passionately Pink for the Cure, a program of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
