Juneau Parks and Recreation Saturday hike: A moderate five-mile hike with 700 feet elevation along Bessie Creek Trail to meadows overlooking Cowee Creek South Fork Valley. The trail follows the old mining road, then skirts along beaver pond before crossing wooded rise and emerging into the upper valley meadows. Wear sturdy boots, warm layers of clothing and bring plenty of food and water. Meet at 9:30 a.m. at the trailhead, Mile 34.2 Glacier Highway, just north of Yankee Cove. The unmarked trailhead is at the top of the steep roadbank on the east side of the highway, a few feet north of Bessie Creek. No dogs or firearms allowed. Info: Juneau Parks and Recreation, 586-5226.

Basketball referees to meet: Local basketball officials will meet from 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Wednesdays from Oct. 11 through Nov. 8 to prepare for the upcoming seasons. Juneau Parks and Recreation adult basketball team registration: Manager packets for the 2000-2001 adult basketball season are currently available at the Juneau Parks and Recreation office, on the second floor of the municipal building, Room 218. Team registration will take place at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 19, at the Assembly Chambers. Late registration will be taken from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Oct. 20, but a $10 late fee will be charged for teams registering after Oct. 19. Space is limited in the leagues. Women's Classic Basketball League registration: Registration forms are due by Friday, Oct. 27, for this league designed for women who are older, new to the game or have less time available to play in the upper-level leagues. Preseason practices begin in November and teams play one game a week (Wednesdays) for 10 weeks through January. Fee of $47.25 per player (includes tax) covers part of team fee and numbered shirt.
