Hunter takes unique trophy

KENAI - It's been said that good things come to those who wait, and for one lucky hunter, those words were never more true than on the afternoon of Sept. 20.

Roy Smith of Kenai hunts bow and rifle season every year. Smith is primarily a meat hunter though, so most of the moose he's taken have been young spike-fork bulls.

In a swampy area around 3 p.m. on the last day of hunting season in the Caribou Hills he was greeted by a spectacular sight.

"About 60 yards away a big bull had just come out of the woods and was walking along the water's edge," said Smith.

Three shots from his .300 Winchester Magnum brought it down. The spread was a whopping 70.5 inches, and the bull was double palmed on both sides.
