Juneau resident Frank "Dutch" Behrends, 89, died Oct. 10, 2004, at the Juneau Pioneers' Home.
He was born Sept. 2, 1915, in Essen, Germany. He worked as a construction truck driver and was a retired Teamster of Local 959.
He arrived in Juneau in 1926 as an immigrant from Essen, along with his parents, Julius and Anna. Julius earned his living working at the A.J. mine. Dutch graduated from Juneau High School in 1935 and then joined the U.S. Army in October 1941. He served during World War II in the Aleutian Chain. He was honorably discharged on Sept. 3, 1945.
Dutch returned to Juneau, married and had five children. Dutch helped to start Teamsters Local number 10. In 1952, he transferred to Local 959 and in 1955 began work on the DEW line. Dutch was a long-standing member of the Moose Lodge number 700.
Dutch was preceded in death by his brother, Henry; his wife, Lucille; and his grandson, Jason Cunningham
He is survived by his daughter, Joanne Behrends; daughter, Carol (Andy) Bakke of Des Moines, Iowa; sons, Dick (Candy) Behrends, Dave (Judy) Behrends, all of Juneau; son, Tommy (Angie) Behrends of Phoenix, Arizona; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2004, at the Moose Lodge. All friends of the family are welcome to attend. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice and Home Care of Juneau.
