I am the head coach of the Juneau-Douglas Crimson Bears junior varsity football team, and assistant coach of the varsity team. I would like to thank Juneau for being the best darn fans in the entire state. I have had the privilege to coach and play at every 4A large-school stadium in Alaska. I wish I could put into words how much of a factor fans have all played in the success of Juneau during the past 20 years.
As a player, the electricity that pours out of the stands after a big block or a touchdown was motivation to sell out each and every play. As a coach, the thrill of putting on a show for loyal fans is enough to make me want to put the extra hour in during film studies, or to draw up a play that will bring an always on-edge crowd to their feet.
This thank you extends particularly to every parent who has brought their child to practice, come rain or shine. This thank you extends even deeper to every fan that has put on their long-johns, filled up their thermos, grabbed their weather-tested blanket, and went to cheer on their Bears. Even if you have never been to a Bears game, but have tuned in on the radio, bought a raffle ticket, had your car washed by students or donated to our program in any way, this thank you is for you, too.
We had an excellent season, and are looking forward to the future. Although I can not promise a third championship, I can promise that we as coaches are going to do whatever it takes this off season to keep our stands worth filling.
