In season: Black bear (Sept. 1-June 30), brown bear (Sept. 15-Dec. 31, March 15-May 31), deer (Sept. 15-Dec. 31), mountain goat (Sept. 1 or Oct. 1, depending on area,-Nov. 31), moose (Sept. 15-Oct. 15), wolf (Aug. 1-April 30), wolverine (Nov. 10-Feb. 15), ducks, geese, brants, snipe, crane (Sept. 1-Dec. 15), red and blue king crab (Oct. 1-March 31), coho salmon (June-Nov.). Oct. 15: Juneau Yacht Club monthly meeting and dinner, 6:30 p.m. at the club.

Oct. 18: Moonlight paddle, Juneau Alpine Club event, moderate level of difficulty. Details: Larry Musarra, 586-0152.

Oct. 19: Botanical afternoon at the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center, two slide shows with local authors. "A Walk Through Glacial Succession of Wild, Edible and Medicinal Plants" with Carol Biggs at 1 p.m. "An Introduction to Field Studies and History of the Juneau Botanical Club" with Wendy Parker Swedell, 2:30 p.m. Details: Mary, 789-6641.

Oct. 27: Hawthorne Peak climb, Juneau Alpine Club event, moderate level of difficulty. Details: Dave Lefebvre, 789-4099.

Nov. 9: Veterans Day 8-K race, Southeast Road Runners event, 10 a.m. Start at river trail parking area near the Brotherhood Bridge. Details: Mike McKrill, 789-9116. Final race of the year.

Nov. 9: 49th Annual Ski Sale, Centennial Hall 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Ongoing: Eaglecrest Ski Area season passes are available at the pre-season discount through Thanksgiving weekend. Eaglecrest staff will be at the Nugget Mall for season pass and ski locker sales Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 5 p.m.

Ongoing: Trap shooting at the Juneau Gun Club, on Montana Creek Road, 5:30-9 p.m. Wednesdays and 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Sundays. Details: 789-9844.
