• Juneau-Douglas High School volleyball - The Crimson Bears host the Sitka Wolves for a pair of Region V-Class 4A matches, with C team, JV and varsity match times TBA at the JDHS main gym.

MEETINGS / CLINICS / ANNOUNCEMENTS

• Basketball referees' meetings - Local basketball officials will be holding meetings at from 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Wednesdays at Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School. The first meeting will be held on Oct. 8. Anyone interested in officiating local basketball games this winter is encouraged to attend. Info: Mike Kelly, 789-9699.

• Juneau-Douglas High School Dance Team training clinics/tryouts - The JDHS Dance Team training clinics and tryouts have been rescheduled. The clinics will be held from 7-9 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, Oct. 13-15. Tryouts take place at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Oct 16. • Midnight Suns Baseball Club tryouts - Tryouts for baseball players ages 11-14 will take place on Sunday, Oct. 19, at the Marie Drake Gym. Players are encouraged to attend both tryout dates. Players age 11-12 will meet from 1-2:30 p.m., while those age 13-14 will try out from 2:30-4 p.m. Please arrive 15 minutes early to register. • Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation 2003-04 Ordway League basketball team registration - Registration takes place at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 15, at the Juneau Assembly Chambers downtown. Late registration takes place from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 16, at the Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation office at city hall; a $10 late fee will be charged. League play begins on Nov. 9 and runs through the first week of February. Team registration packets are available at the Parks and Rec office, Room 218 of the Municipal Building. • Adult basketball scorekeepers needed for 2003-04 season - Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation seeks scorekeepers for the season, which starts on Sunday, Nov. 9, and will run through the first week of January. • Youth open gyms - Meet from 8-11 p.m. on Saturdays at Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School gym. Youth open gyms are free for students in grades 5-12. Info: Community schools director Joyce Kitka, 463-1700, Ext. 327.

• Adult volleyball/basketball open gyms - Meet from 7-9 p.m. on Fridays and from 7-9 p.m. on Sundays at Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School gym. Cost is $4 and open gym is limited to adults (age 18-older) only. Info: Community Schools, 463-1700, Ext. 325.

• Open badminton gyms - Meet from 8-10 p.m. on Mondays and 7-10 p.m. on Thursdays at the Auke Bay Elementary School gym, or from 7- 9 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Gastineau Elementary School gym in Douglas. Auke Bay gyms open to adults and teens; Gastineau gyms open to all ages. $3 fee per session. All abilities welcomed, bring a racquet if you own one. • Zach Gordon Youth Center climbing wall - Climbing wall hours are 3-7 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays and 3-9 p.m. on Fridays. The climbing wall can be used by people of all ages. Climbers age 20-younger climb free, while adults 21-older pay $5 to use the wall. Youth-adult interaction is encouraged, so an adult climbing with a youth pays no fee. • Treadwell Arena programs - The ice arena is open seven days a week with a variety of public open skates, youth open skates, pond hockey and rental times available (see Treadwell Arena Web site for details). The rink is closed for ice maintenance from 7:45-10:45 a.m. on Mondays and from 7:45 a.m. to noon on Fridays. Fees for open skates are $4 adults, $3 youths (age 17-younger) and $2 seniors (age 65-older). Fees for pond hockey are $5 adults, $4 youths and $3 seniors. Skate rental is $2 for adults and youths, and $1.90 for seniors. Passes are available for open skates, pond hockey and skate rental. Facility rental is $150 an hour. • Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation Wednesday and Saturday hikes - For updates on locations of Wednesday and Saturday group hikes, call the Juneau Parks and Recreation Hikes Hotline. Always remember to bring plenty of food and water, wear warm layers of clothing and proper footwear for the hike. No dogs or firearms are allowed. Wednesday hikes are limited to hikers 18 years of age or older. Saturday hikes are open to families, and children must be accompanied by an adult.
