The Haines cross-country team won the sportsmanship trophy at the recent state championship meet, but it really should have gone to Juneau-Douglas. The Crimson Bears have set a shining example for all teams in the region and the state by their hard work, excellence and positive attitude.
In many ways it is easier to be a good loser than a good winner, especially if, as Juneau does, you dominate all other teams you compete against. I am grateful for the role models the Juneau boys and girls have become for the Haines runners. Peer pressure can be a very good thing. When my team looks at the Juneau team and says "we want to be like them" I am thrilled.
When you see the coaches and runners, please join me in thanking them for setting the bar so high- both on and off the course- and congratulate them all on another terrific season.
