FAIRBANKS - The Alaska Division of Forestry is working on four prescribed burns to keep a handle on next year's forest fires.
The prescribed burns are in the Goldstream and Murphy Dome areas. The areas were chosen to reduce fire risk around populated areas near Fairbanks.
Firebreaks are being created as part of a multiyear plan by the Fairbanks North Star Borough and state Forestry officials.
The Army is doing two controlled burns on military land to eliminate flammable zones in its training areas.
The state of Alaska is coming off the ninth-heaviest forest fire season ever recorded, with nearly 3 million acres burned. Much of that activity occurred around Fairbanks.
