SITKA - The race for mayor in Sitka is coming down to the narrowest of margins.

The Sitka Sentinel reports Cheryl Westover held a one-vote lead over John Stein after a count Monday of absentee and questioned ballots cast in the municipal election a week ago.

Westover led Stein by 60 votes going into Monday but Stein won 301 of the votes counted to Westover's 242.

That makes the final unofficial tally 1,488 votes for Westover to 1,487 for Stein.

City Clerk Colleen Ingman said Monday she planned to run absentee and questioned ballots through a counting machine again.

Ingman says election results will not be final until they are certified by the Sitka Assembly. Certification of the election is on the agenda for Tuesday.
