ANCHORAGE - A 21-year-old man was gunned down in the parking lot of a Muldoon Veterans of Foreign Wars post early Saturday morning, the fourth person to die violently at the hands of another in Anchorage over a six-day period.
A 21-year-old woman also was wounded when gunfire erupted outside VFW Post 9978 in an apparent extension of a ruckus that started earlier inside. The woman was shot once and is expected to survive.
Police identified the dead man as Louis DeJesus III but released little other information.
They homicide was the fifth in Anchorage in less than three weeks. Police have made arrests in two of the killings.
"I've been a cop for 26 years," said Sgt. Ross Plummer, a homicide investigator. "It's just sometimes it's busier than other times. ... Right now, we're just having a high number of homicides, which is unfortunate."
None of the homicides are connected, police said.
The VFW shooting is the 17th homicide in Anchorage this year.
In that slaying, police said, about 100 people were inside the post when a disturbance started at 2 a.m.
The crowd, mostly a younger clientele who some customers said have scared off some VFW regulars recently, poured out of the bar into the parking lot.
Several shots from a handgun came from somewhere in the area of the parking lot, police said.
DeJesus, taken to Alaska Regional Hospital by another patron, was pronounced dead there. The wounded woman was taken to another hospital by friends.
Citing the ongoing investigation, police did not release the name of the female victim, her condition or which hospital she was in.
