Fairbanks Marine dies in Afghanistan

FAIRBANKS - A 20-year-old U.S. Marine from Fairbanks has died in Afghanistan.

Cpl. Jason Karella was part of a battalion helping train Afghan national security forces.

He died Thursday in the country's Farah province.

Military spokesman Lt. Curtis Williamson declined to identify Karella's death as the result of hostile fire.

Karella was part of the California-based 2nd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, the only freestanding Marine battalion currently serving in Afghanistan.

Williamson says 15 Marines from Karella's battalion have been killed in Afghanistan this year.
