KENAI - A 36-year-old man accused of strangling his prison cellmate to death has pleaded guilty in a deal with prosecutors.

Carl Abuhl of Ketchikan pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the 2004 death of Gregory Beaudoin at the Spring Creek Correctional Center.

Abuhl had been charged with first-degree murder. In exchange, witness tampering charges were dropped.

Superior Court Judge Anna Moran set sentencing for Jan. 29, when he's expected to receive a 30-year sentence.

According to Alaska State Troopers, Abuhl strangled Beaudoin with pieces of cloth he had torn from a bed sheet. Investigators say Abuhl then disposed of the cloth by flushing them down the toilet in his cell.

Abuhl already is serving a 60-year sentence for the May 2001 death of Steve Bowen, who was bludgeoned to death with a baseball bat.
