Filtration problems delay hatchery startup

FAIRBANKS - Operation of a new $45 million fish hatchery in Fairbanks is being delayed because of problems with the water filtration system.

State managers were planning to grow 133,000 rainbow trout at the Alaska Department of Fish and Game's hatchery this winter for release next spring.

Jeff Milton, the department's hatchery program manager, says operators won't be able to place the fish there early enough to produce catchable-size trout next spring.

Production at the new Ruth Burnett Sport Fish Hatchery was scheduled to begin months ago in June.
