2003 Fall Skateboard & Rollerblade Competition - Juneau Parks & Recreation/Pipeline Skate Park will hold a competition on Saturday, Oct. 18, at noon, with warm ups beforehand. Helmet use is required. Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School youth basketball camps - Dzantik'i Heeni will be hosting youth basketball camps on Friday and Saturday, Oct, 17-18. A session for 6th, 7th and 8th graders will be held on Friday from 1 to 4:30 p.m., and a camp for 3rd, 4th and 5th graders will be held on Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon. There is a $25 fee, and registration will take place one-half hour before each camp begins. The camp will be run by several coaches - some from Dzantik'i Heeni - as well as former college players and current Juneau-Douglas High School players. The camps will be geared to accomodate a variety of skill levels and will cover fundamentals of offense and defense. Basketball referees' meetings - Local basketball officials will be holding meetings at from 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Wednesdays at Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School. The first meeting will be held on Oct. 8. Juneau-Douglas High School Dance Team training clinics/tryouts - The JDHS Dance Team training clinics and tryouts have been rescheduled. A clinics will be held from 7-9 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 15. Midnight Suns Baseball Club tryouts - Tryouts for baseball players ages 11-14 will take place on Sunday, Oct. 19, at the Marie Drake Gym. Players are encouraged to attend both tryout dates. Players age 11-12 will meet from 1-2:30 p.m., while those age 13-14 will try out from 2:30-4 p.m. Please arrive 15 minutes early to register. Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation 2003-04 Ordway League basketball team registration - Registration takes place at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 15, at the Juneau Assembly Chambers downtown. Late registration takes place from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 16, at the Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation office at city hall; a $10 late fee will be charged. American Red Cross Wilderness First Aid Basics Course - The American Red Cross will be holding a 16-hour course on first-aid basics for those who live, work or play in remote areas. The class will combine lectures, skills practice and role-play learning to teach the response steps and treatment for injuries and illnesses in delayed-help situations. The class costs $125, and sessions will be held on Wednesday and Thursday, Oct. 22 and 23, from 6 to 10 p.m. and on Saturday, Oct. 25, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Red Cross' Southeast Alaska District office, 3200 Hospital Drive, Suite 203. VISTA youth hockey program - Local VISTA (Volunteers In Service To America) worker Matthew Edison is pursuing funding to continue a youth hockey program created last year. The program is geared toward Alaska Native students who want to learn how to play hockey, but can't afford equipment and ice-time fees. Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation Women's Classic Basketball League registration - Registration forms are due by Friday, Oct. 24, for this less-competitive league for older women, or women with less time due to kids, work and other commitments. The women's division in the Ordway League (see above) is for highly competitive women. Preseason practices begin in November, followed by games once a week on Wednesdays through January. Teams play 10 games in the season. The cost is $47.25 per player (includes tax), which covers the player fee, a share of the team fee, plus use of a numbered jersey. Players register individually with the Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation, and staff members or volunteers will put teams together. Mount Jumbo Gym preschool open gym - This Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation program is open from 10:30 a.m. to noon every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday at 909 Fourth Street in Douglas for children ages 1-6 and their parents or caregivers. A ratio of four children to one adult must be met. Balls, mats, trikes, scooters, large building blocks, parachutes and a Little Tykes climber system will be available for use. Open badminton gyms - Meet from 8-10 p.m. on Mondays and 7-10 p.m. on Thursdays at the Auke Bay Elementary School gym, or from 7- 9 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Gastineau Elementary School gym in Douglas. Zach Gordon Youth Center climbing wall - Climbing wall hours are 3-7 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays and 3-9 p.m. on Fridays. The climbing wall can be used by people of all ages. Climbers age 20-younger climb free, while adults 21-older pay $5 to use the wall. Youth-adult interaction is encouraged, so an adult climbing with a youth pays no fee. Treadwell Arena programs - The ice arena is open seven days a week with a variety of public open skates, youth open skates, pond hockey and rental times available (see Treadwell Arena Web site for details). The rink is closed for ice maintenance from 7:45-10:45 a.m. on Mondays and from 7:45 a.m. to noon on Fridays. Fees for open skates are $4 adults, $3 youths (age 17-younger) and $2 seniors (age 65-older). Fees for pond hockey are $5 adults, $4 youths and $3 seniors. Skate rental is $2 for adults and youths, and $1.90 for seniors. Passes are available for open skates, pond hockey and skate rental. Facility rental is $150 an hour. Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation Wednesday and Saturday hikes - For updates on locations of Wednesday and Saturday group hikes, call the Juneau Parks and Recreation Hikes Hotline. Always remember to bring plenty of food and water, wear warm layers of clothing and proper footwear for the hike. No dogs or firearms are allowed. Wednesday hikes are limited to hikers 18 years of age or older. Saturday hikes are open to families, and children must be accompanied by an adult.
