Cameras are omnipresent at Crimson Bears' games

Posted: Friday, October 15, 2004

"Coach's Corner" is just one of many media ventures for the Juneau-Douglas High School football team.

Every Crimson Bear game - home and away - is taped by Kathi Yanamura, wife of coach Reilly Richey. While KATH-TV tapes from the pressbox - games are shown on tape delay at 3 p.m. Mondays - Yanamura patrols the sidelines, filming continuously.

"You can see everything - who's paying attention in the huddle, who's running all-out and who's not," Yanamura said.

Players like to watch the games - and not just for the highlights. Mistakes that go unnoticed during the game are evident on the television screen.

"The best part is watching people when they totally mess up and don't tell anyone," Juneau quarterback Chris Hinkley said.

"It's cool that the camera is always with us, everywhere we go," Juneau fullback-linebacker Josh Lehauli said.

The Crimson Bears' coaches take full advantage of the game film.

"The quality of the film we get as coaches is unmatched by anyone in the state," Juneau offensive coordinator Rich Sjoroos said. "We really learn a lot from those tapes."

After home games, Richey and Yanamura stay up until 4 a.m. the next morning making copies of the game tape, including one for the opposing team's coaching staff - which Richey has to deliver to the airport at 6 a.m. as the team leaves Juneau.

At the end of the season, Yanamura assembles a highlight video that is played at the Crimson Bears' team banquet. Some players also request individual highlight videos to send to college coaches.
