• Glacier Swim Club - October Splash swim meet: Youth swimmers from across Southeast Alaska will compete at Augustus Brown pool during this three-day meet. Events are scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. Sunday.

• Juneau Soccer Club registration - Registration for the 2004-05 season is underway through October. This program is for young soccer players in grades 4-12 of all skill levels. There are year-round developmental teams and competitive programs that travel to state and regional tournaments. Players are grouped by age and gender. • Juneau Parks and Recreation Adult Ordway Basketball team registration - Registration was held Thursday; late registration will be held on Friday, Oct. 15, from 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. at the Juneau Parks and Recreation office. • Juneau Parks and Recreation Women's Classic Basketball League - Registration forms are due by Oct. 22 for this league, which is open to women who want to play team basketball but are older, new to the game or have limited time available due to other commitments. Aggressive play is strongly discouraged. Preseason practices begin in November, with one game a week on Wednesdays - 10 games total - through Feb. 2. The cost is $47.25 per player. • Hunter Education Instructor training course - This two-day class takes place from 7-10 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 22, and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 23, at the state's new indoor shooting range on Montana Creek Road. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game will lead these classes, which helps train people how to teach basic safe-hunting and other hunter education courses. All persons interested in this class must complete a background check with the Alaska State Troopers before the first session (there is a $20 fee for the background check that is reimbursed). Background checks can be completed from 8 a.m. to noon and 1-4 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays at 2760 Sherwood Lane or 450 Whittier St. Bring two forms of identification, including one with a photo. • Paid basketball referees needed - The Juneau Parks and Recreation Department is seeking referees for its youth basketball program (ages 8-18). Applicants must be at least 14 years old to officiate, and games start on Oct. 25. A good knowledge of the game is helpful, and prior experience as a referee is not necessary. Training is available. • Alaska Department of Fish and Game hunter education course for women - This class for and taught by women will be held Oct. 28-30 at the indoor shooting range on Montana Creek Road. Class times are 7-9 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 28, and Friday, Oct. 29, and 9 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 30. The class will include instruction on firearm safety and handling, wildlife conservation and management, game laws and regulations, hunter ethics and hunter responsibility. Successful graduates will receive lifetime hunter education certification recognized throughout North America. Those taking the course need to pick up a packet of study materials, costing $10, at the Douglas ADF&G office, Room 210, by Thursday, Oct. 21. Info: Alaska Department of Fish and Game, 465-4265.

• Juneau Ski Club/Juneau Ski Patrol 51st Annual Ski Sale - The annual fund-raiser takes place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 6, at Centennial hall. Admission is $2 (age 12-younger free), and there is a door prize of a season pass from Eaglecrest Ski Area. In addition to the ski swap, people can register for Juneau Ski Patrol, the Juneau Ski Club race program and lessons at Eaglecrest, and they can buy Eaglecrest season passes. People can check items in for sale ($5 minimum sale price per item) from 5-8 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, Nov. 4-5, and from 7:30-9:30 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 6. • Youth open gyms - Meet from 8-11 p.m. on Saturdays at Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School gym. Youth open gyms are free for students in grades 5-12. Info: Community schools director Joyce Kitka, 463-1700, Ext. 327.

• Zach Gordon Youth Center climbing wall - New climbing wall hours are 5-7 p.m. on Mondays, and 3:30-7 p.m. on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The climbing wall can be used by people of all ages. Climbers age 20-younger climb free, while adults 21-older pay $5 to use the wall. Youth-adult interaction is encouraged, so an adult climbing with a youth pays no fee. • Juneau Community Schools open gyms - Basketball, volleyball and soccer open gyms for adults are available several times a week. Basketball and volleyball open gyms are held Fridays and Sundays from 7-9 p.m. at Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School. Soccer open gyms are held Saturdays from 6-8 p.m. at Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School and Sundays from 6:45-8:45 p.m. at Floyd Dryden Middle School. • Basketball/volleyball court rentals available - The Juneau Community Schools program has basketball/volleyball court rental times available from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays at Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School. The cost to rent the court is $20 per hour, which must be paid at the time of rental. This is for adult activities only. Info: Juneau Community Schools, 463-1717.

• Juneau Department of Parks and Recreation Wednesday and Saturday hikes - For updates on locations of Wednesday and Saturday group hikes, call the Juneau Parks and Recreation Hikes Hotline. Always remember to bring plenty of food and water, wear warm layers of clothing and proper footwear for the hike. No dogs or firearms are allowed. Wednesday hikes are limited to hikers 18 years of age or older. Saturday hikes are open to families, and children must be accompanied by an adult.
