Greg Cowling, a deckhand on the fishing boat Commander, holds up a jumbo flying squid caught in September in the ocean near Sitka. Hundreds of squid surrounded the fishing boat at night, enabling crew members to easily catch several in dip nets. Previously, no sightings of this squid species had ever been recorded in Alaska.
