Mabel Anderson

Juneau resident Mabel Anderson died Oct. 14, 2000, at her home. She was 99.

She was born Oct. 3, 1901, in Seattle. She received a teaching degree from Walla Walla College and after a short teaching career, she married Albin "Andy" Anderson in 1928. She and her husband raised a daughter in Seattle and cared for several foster children.

In 1982 she moved to Juneau to be closer to her family. She learned to bowl, a sport she pursued until she was 96. She enjoyed the distinction of being Alaska's oldest league bowler. Her other pastimes included needlework, watercolor, painting and gardening.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Gavin Denton, granddaughters Hali and Kelda Denton of Juneau, and Roxana (Tom) Augusztiny and Andrea (Stephen) Kinnaman of Seattle.

At her request, there will be no funeral service or memorial services. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Hospice and Home Care of Juneau, 3200 Hospital Drive, Suite 100, Juneau, AK 99801.

Augusta Clements

Longtime Elfin Cove resident Augusta Clements died Oct. 13, 2000, at St. Ann's Care Center after a short battle with cancer. She was 77.

She was born Aug. 31, 1923, in Willamina, Ore., to Rollins and Vera Kosack. She joined the U.S. Navy in 1942 and served four years before her honorable discharge.

In 1971 she moved to Elfin Cove after her marriage to Roy Clements, a commercial fisherman. Their home was a gathering place for social events. She nourished the community for many years with her cookies and breads, which were sold at the local store and from her home. Her wild berry jams and jellies became famous with the many tourists visiting Elfin Cove. Her flower garden was always unique and colorful. She nurtured children in need for extended periods of time. Her favorite job was working and cooking at the Elfin Cove School.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers.

She is survived by her husband Roy Clements of Elfin Cove and her five sisters and numerous nieces and nephews in Oregon.

A memorial service will be held at her home in Elfin Cove next summer.
