JUNEAU - Dance instructor Amaya from New Mexico will teach a weekend belly dancing workshop Oct. 17 through Oct. 20 at the American Legion Hall in Auke Bay. The workshop is sponsored by the Juneau Middle Eastern Dance group Daughters of the New Moon.
Amaya has taught dance for 28 years and performed most of her life. She blends Spanish and Arabic dance styles.
Amaya will teach the basics of her technique and general anatomy of a belly dancer from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday. Amaya will teach hip and combination moves from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday. The final session from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday will address rhythms and finger cymbals, the role of the veil, and arm techniques. The cost is $50 per session, $75 for two sessions or $100 for all three days.
A performance will be offered at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the American Legion Hall in Auke Bay with Amaya and the Daughters of the New Moon. The show is free for workshop participants.
