JUNEAU - Musician Jay Thomas, who plays trumpet, fluegelhorn, saxophone and flute is joining Juneau's Thunder Mountain Big Band and Rainlight Jazz Quartet for performances Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 19 and 20.
Juneau musician Galen Tromble, who set up the shows, wanted to bring a professional player in who could perform as a guest with both groups. Last March he brought Toronto musician Chase Sanborn to Juneau for a similar jazz weekend.
"This fall I wanted to bring someone up from Seattle," he said. "Seattle has a very active jazz scene, and I'd like to establish relationships with musicians there who can come up for events like this."
Tromble said Thomas started his jazz career as a trumpet player but is an excellent sax player as well. Thomas is an integral part of the Northwest jazz scene and plays internationally.
Thomas and the Thunder Mountain Big Band will perform starting at 8 p.m. Saturday at Mike's Place in Douglas. At 7 p.m. Sunday, Thomas and the Rainlight Jazz Quartet will perform at Di Sopra downtown. The venue is open only for desserts and beverages that evening, but meals will be available downstairs at the Fiddlehead.
Tickets are $15 for each event and are available at Hearthside Books.
