When the Juneau electorate denied Jeannie Johnson re-election to the Juneau Assembly last Tuesday, voters decreed that for at least the next year, Juneau's nine-member governing body would be exclusively male.
Over the past 34 years, only in 1993, 1981, 1978, 1977 and 1976 did our Assembly lack a woman's voice. Twenty years ago, three women sat on the Juneau Assembly and as recently as 2001, our nine-member Assembly included three women.
The Empire encouraged defeat of Jeannie Johnson but gave a broad coverage to last Saturday's "empowerment" rally for women. I wonder how many of the 140 women who participated in that event went to the polls two days later and helped catapult our community backwards, depriving the Capital City of a single female voice.
