Valley Toastmasters recently hosted the Taku Toastmasters in an area-wide speech competition in two categories, humorous speech and table topics, in preparation for the Yukon-Alaska Council of Toastmasters Laugh Out Loud conference to be held Oct. 24-26 in Anchorage.
Competing in the humorous speech contest were the winners from the club contests: Valley Toastmaster John Tucker and Taku Toastmaster Brenda Hewitt.
Table topics, a classic event at most weekly meeting used to enhance a member's ability to do extemporaneous speaking, had two club-winning participants as well: Richard Pratt, of Taku Toastmasters, against Don Reid, of the Valley Toastmasters. Hewitt and Pratt both won the area competition in their divisions.
Toastmasters is open to all adults who wish to conquer their fear of public speaking, gain oral communication skills or master presentations. The friendly supportive atmosphere paired with written manuals that allow for gradual growth, help people of all ages and abilities add new tools for use at work or in everyday conversations. The Valley Toastmasters meets weekly on Thursday mornings at 6:15 a.m. at the Valley Senior Center. The Taku Toastmasters meets at Noon, at the Federal Building on Mondays.
