The Alaska AHEC program is a statewide university-industry partnership managed by the University Of Alaska Anchorage School Of Nursing's Alaska Center for Rural Health. It is part of a national AHEC program with sites in 45 states. The four existing established regional sites are South Central AHEC (Anchorage/Mat-Su/Gulf Coast), Yukon-Kuskokwim AHEC, Interior AHEC (Fairbanks/Interior) and Southeast AHEC (Alaska Panhandle). Additional Alaska AHEC has plans for additional regional sites to be implemented in the near future.
The Alaska AHEC program is focused on building Alaska's health workforce so it can provide better care to underserved populations. The program introduces youth to health careers by allowing them to meet with health care professionals. It helps health organizations in rural Alaska find new employees and provide access to care through clinical rotations for practitioners and internships for students. And it provides greater access to continuing education classes for rural health care professionals.
