JDHS site council seeks input on pledge

The site council of Juneau-Douglas High School is seeking input from parents and the community on several issues this fall, including whether or not the Pledge of Allegiance should be recited weekly or daily.

The local school board has determined that classes must say the pledge at least weekly to satisfy the new state law requiring the pledge "regularly."

The site council will vote on the issue at its meeting Thursday, which occurs at 5 p.m. in the staff room across from the library at JDHS.

Parents and other community members who would like to express their opinion can contact members Andi Story at 789-4292, Lance Carpenter, 789-4455 or Margie Ridgeway, 789-1937.

The 18-member site council, composed of teachers, staff, parents and business representatives, also will be involved in developing proposals for change at the high school as part of the accreditation process. In addition, the group is charged with deciding whether or not to open the hire for a new principal, as the current principal has an interim appointment.

Other issues before the body this year will include how to improve parent-teacher conferences and food service at the high school.

Former JDHS student doing foreign study

Several Whitman College students are participating in foreign study programs during the fall semester, including at least one student from Juneau:

Noora Parish, junior history major; 1997 graduate of Juneau-Douglas High School, daughter of David J. Parish of Juneau and Deborah Sogge-Kermani of Sitka. Parish is in Costa Rica, taking classes sponsored by the University of Costa Rica.

Nearly one-third of all juniors at Whitman take part on foreign study programs. Whitman is a private, independent, academically selective liberal arts and sciences college of 1,300 students.

It is cited by U.S. News & World Report, Peterson's Competitive Guide, and Fiske's Guide as one of the nation's top liberal arts and sciences colleges.
