Give Cathy a chance

While I am a registered Democrat and usually vote that way, I'm convinced the best choice for this year's local senate race is Cathy Muñoz. I believe Cathy deserves a chance to be our Senator given her performance on the Assembly.

As our senator, she will be able to work effectively within the majority to get things accomplished for Juneau. She has the personality and people skills necessary to mend some of the divisiveness that presently exists between Juneau and our neighbors. Most of all, I think she will be able to restore some of the confidence people have in their public officials.

I believe people in public service deserve to be commended, including Kim Elton. However, Kim hasn't been effective representing Juneau in the Legislature. I urge everybody to look at his record before casting their vote. In eight years, he has only authored two minor pieces of legislation that passed into law. While this isn't the only gauge to measure someone's effectiveness, it certainly is one of them. He also wasn't confirmed on the Finance Committee, which is very unusual.

I have also been disappointed at some of his votes, including voting against the resolution to protect the American flag. He was the only legislator in the state to vote this way, which offended many of our own citizens. The most disappointing thing I find about Kim is that he has to exaggerate some of his accomplishments to make up for his lack of effectiveness, such as taking credit for the high school in the Valley, the J.D. High renovation, and the National Guard Armory. He didn't attend any of the Finance Committee hearings on these issues. Remember when you listen to his campaign pledges over the next couple of weeks that actions speak louder than words and that history has a way of repeating itself. He's had plenty of opportunity to show his effectiveness, now it's time to give someone else a chance.

That's the reason I'm voting for Cathy Muñoz. I've seen her actions on the Assembly and I was impressed with the number of things she did for this community. Whether you are a Democrat or Republican, I urge you to give Cathy a chance to put her skills to work for this community as our next senator.
