Photo: Erosion barriers crumble

Posted: Wednesday, October 18, 2006

Sen. Ted Stevens, R-Alaska, inspects on Sunday the anti-erosion embankment in Kivalina, built during the summer to protect areas from fall storms. Large waves on Saturday and Sunday caused part of the $3 million structure, built to prevent damage to the village, to collapse into the sea. Kivalina is one of several rural Alaska villages threatened by erosion.
