SITKA - Do you have a lot of prescriptions and need help managing them? Do you want to know how your different medications react to each other?
The SouthEast Alaska Regional Health Consortium will host a medication review event for patients from 1-7 p.m. Wednesday at the Mt. Edgecumbe Hospital Litehouse Conference Rooms. During the event, patients will receive a review of their medications and medication counseling. Blood pressure screenings also will be available.
Patients should bring all of their medications with them to the event. If patients can't bring in their actual medications, then they need to write down a detailed list of the medications that includes the following information for each medication (with examples):
Provider name (Dr. John Doe)
Date of prescription (Oct. 2, 2009)
Medication name and unit size (Placebo 250 MG tab)
Quantity prescribed (84 tablets)
Dosage (take two pills three times a day for infection)
Prescription number if from SEARHC pharmacy (Rx. No. 1234567)
In addition to prescription medications, patients should list their over-the-counter supplements, such as vitamins, herbal supplements, glucosamine-chondroitin, aspirin therapy and any other items they take on a regular basis. Some over-the-counter supplements can react with prescription medications, which is why patients need to bring this information.
The medication review will be done by pharmacy students who are graduate students under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist. No appointments are necessary, and the review should take about 10-15 minutes.
