SITKA - Ballots in the Sitka mayor's race will be re-counted at the request of the second-place finisher.

John Stein trails Cheryl Westover by three votes in unofficial results of the Oct. 5 election. Stein filed for a re-count Thursday.

The Sitka Sentinel reports the city covers the cost of the re-count when the margin is within 1 percent.

The Sitka Assembly set the re-count for 9 a.m. Oct. 19 and scheduled certification of results for Oct. 26.

City Clerk Colleen Ingman says unofficial results show 1,493 votes for Westover and 1,490 for Stein.

The re-count will be conducted at city hall and is open to observers.
