Stories for the telling

'Storybox' series opens with focus on Celtic tales

Posted: Thursday, October 20, 2005

Yukon storyteller Nicole Bauberger will join Juneau storytellers Brett Dillingham, Lily Hudson and Ishmael Hope for the first installment of the three-part "Storybox" family series, at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 27, at Resurrection Lutheran Church.

The evening will be somewhat focused on Celtic stories. Bauberger tells several, and Dillingham just returned from a three-week trip through the United Kingdom.

Admission is $8 or $22 for all three shows. Some of the $8 will defray Bauberger's traveling costs. The rest will go to The Glory Hole. Dillingham has been telling stories under the "Storybox" moniker for several years.

storytellers: brett dillingham, ishmael hope, lily hudson and nicole bauberger.

when: 7 p.m. thursday, oct. 27.

where: resurrection lutheran church.

admission: $8 for one show, $22 for the series (oct. 27, feb. 23 and may 18)

Bauberger lived in Peterborough, Ontario, for more than 20 years, before moving to the Yukon a few years ago. She's visited Juneau several times, taught at colleges, created artwork and murals for schools around Canada and worked overseas.

"She's kind of a Renaissance woman," Dillingham said. "She's picked up some Celtic stories over the years, and her style of storytelling, I find it very interesting. She'll be telling a story, and then she'll go off on a little historical tangent. The details she gives are so good that she takes you away."

Dillingham returned from his trip Saturday. He told stories at libraries, art centers, schools and pubs - one week in Dublin, Ireland, one week in Cork, Ireland, and one week in northern England.

"I was hearing these great Celtic stories when I was in Ireland, and Nicole was coming down around this time, so I thought we'll do this around (Celtic storytelling)," Dillingham said.

Dillingham is working on a Celtic story he created during the trip.

"It's not quite where I want it, but I like the story and I still might tell it," he said. "I want to find something inside of it that I haven't found yet."

The evening should last 90 minutes to two hours, with an intermission.
