Anchorage Assembly looks at bar hours

Posted: Tuesday, October 20, 2009

ANCHORAGE - The Anchorage Assembly is looking at the issue of how to increase safety for bar patrons.

Assembly members are looking into whether it is a good idea to allow bars to stay open one extra hour.

The proposed ordinance is in response to concerns about what happens when bars have the same closing hours, making it convenient for predators to look for drunken women. Bar patrons also sometimes must wait in the cold for taxi rides.

The proposed ordinance if approved would result in a one-year trial run. It would allow up to 15 approved bars to stay open for the extra hour after the last drink is served at 2:30 a.m.
