In this undated photo from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, a biologist looks over a dead humpback whale found last week on a beach in Peril Strait. A NOAA Fisheries biologist, four veterinarians and a Forest Service volunteer recently returned to their homes after studying the whale. This is the first humpback whale found this year in Southeast Alaska that was likely to have been struck by a ship. The biologists are trying to figure out what boats were in the area and might have seen the whale get struck.
