Power outage reported in downtown Juneau

JUNEAU - A power outage occurred in downtown Juneau and nearby Douglas Island on Monday.

Alaska Electric Light & Power and police said power went out about 11 a.m., affecting about 5,400 customers. Power was restored within 20 minutes to all but 1,160 customers in the downtown area.

The cause wasn't immediately known. But officials were investigating two separate reports, one of a transformer that was smoking and also that of a contractor possibly hitting a pole in downtown Juneau.

The state Capitol has its own generator, and offices there were not affected.
