Women's Opportunity Awards program
Soroptimist International of Juneau announces its 2003-04 Women's Opportunity Awards program. The awards are cash grants for women seeking to improve their employment status by seeking additional education or training. The program is designed to assist women who are the primary source of financial support for their families. The women may use the awards to offset any costs associated with gaining higher education, including books, child care or transportation.
Information and applications are available at the UAS financial aid office, at the Vocational Training Center, AWARE shelter and Southeast Alaska Regional Resource Center, or may be downloaded from www.soroptimist.org by clicking on "Women's Opportunity Awards." Applications are due by Dec. 15 and should be sent to Judy Ripley, WOA Chair, P.O. Box 32201, Juneau, AK 99803.
The Juneau club will award its winner $500. She will become eligible for a region-level award. Each year, three awards - one first-place $5,000 award and two $3,000 awards - are granted in each of Soroptimist's 29 regions. The first-place regional winners then become candidates for one of three $10,000 finalist awards.
Women are eligible to apply for the award if they are: 1) a female head of household, 2) are attending, or have been accepted to, a vocational/skills training program, or an undergraduate degree program, 3) have financial need and 4) are motivated to achieve educational and career goals.
