Juneau bishop to head Fairbanks Diocese

JUNEAU -- The Most Rev. Michael W. Warfel now has two dioceses in his pastoral care.

The Juneau Diocese announced today that Warfel, Roman Catholic bishop of the Juneau Diocese since Dec. 17, 1996, has been appointed interim apostolic administrator of the Fairbanks Diocese.

Bishop Warfel will assume all the duties of a diocesan bishop for the Fairbanks Diocese until a new bishop is selected for that district.

Warfel, 53, replaced the Rev. Richard D. Case, S.J., who has held the position of diocesan administrator in Fairbanks since the death of Bishop Michael Kaniecki in August 2000.

The interim appointment will allow Case to resume some of his former pastoral duties.

The appointment does not mean that Warfel will be leaving Juneau or his post here, said the Rev. Tony Dummer of St. Paul's Church in Juneau. "He is only going to be administrator for Fairbanks. He is still going to be bishop of Juneau," Dummer said.
