Assessing the debate

Posted: Wednesday, October 23, 2002

During the gubernatorial debate held last night in Fairbanks between candidates Fran Ulmer and Frank Murkowski, one of the attending reporters asked Fran why any liberals would vote for her, given her stand on issues like missile defense and ANWR. She proceeded to state her appeal to folks regardless of whether they consider themselves liberal or conservative. Nice answer, and true enough, but here it is straight: Why wouldn't they, given the alternative?

Murkowski, Ulmer debate fiscal gap

In fact, Lt. Gov. Ulmer is more conservative than I happen to like on various issues, but she is a lot more liberal than Sen. Murkowski, and judging from the debate, much smarter, better informed, more passionate and clearly the best candidate for governor. Here is another reason to vote for her: To provide some checks and balance to a state government that is already dominated by ultra-conservative Republicans in the House and Senate. If there is a shred of progressiveness in you, there is no other viable choice; if you are conservative but are not beholden to the Republican Party, vote for Fran Ulmer. If you are a Green, this may be a close race and a vote for anyone but Fran will help to elect Frank, don't let your vote count against you.

I am not a member of the Democratic Party, but you can bet your bottom dollar that I will be voting for Fran Ulmer.
