ANCHORAGE - A prominent U.S. senator from Texas says she wants U.S. Sen. Ted Stevens to continue to be a strong voice for the military and for veterans.
Republican Kay Bailey Hutchison spoke Tuesday in Anchorage on behalf of Stevens, who is on trial in Washington, D.C., charged with failing to disclose more than $250,000 in gifts and services.
Hutchison says she knows what Stevens is going through.
She was accused in 1993 of using her post as state treasurer to misuse state employees and equipment for her Senate campaign, and of trying to impede the investigation.
She was acquitted.
Hutchison says if Stevens is convicted but wins re-election, she's sure Senate colleagues will allow him to return while he appeals.
