Taken 85 years ago today, this photograph shows the Canadian Pacific steamer Princess Sophia stranded on Vanderbilt Reef, northwest of Juneau. At approximately 2 a.m. on Oct. 24, 1918, the Princess Sophia ran aground. The Canadian Pacific office in Juneau was alarmed when alerted because the weather in Juneau was calm with light snow. In the early evening on Oct. 25, the Princess Sophia slipped off Vanderbilt Reef and sank. All 278 passengers and 65 crew members were lost, except for a small dog which swam to a nearby island.
