The recent 80-meter addition to the Treadwell Mine Historic Trail at Sandy Beach proved to be a big success at the Juneau Invitational Cross Country meet on Sept. 18. The new trail enabled spectators to have easier access to the race and eliminated a dangerous U-turn. It fits in nicely with all of the Treadwell improvements over the last 12 years.
The Juneau-Douglas High School and Thunder Mountain High School cross country runners and parents helped to clear brush and do finish work. Arete Construction donated a 24-foot culvert and mini excavator to the project. Brandon Godkin did a wonderful job installing the culvert, removing stumps and grading out the surface. The trail looks wonderful, thanks to owner Ed Sessions and Arete Construction. It is a nice addition to our well-used trail system in Douglas.
