JUNEAU - Local rowers are sending out a survey to gauge interest in a club for residents involved in the sport.
"We and others are interested in forming a rowing club in Juneau, with a goal of promoting the sport, and making it more available to people in Juneau by providing shells, convenient launching/storage areas, and free informal instruction," said Matt Kirchhoff.
Local rowers have used area waters, mostly Gastineau Channel, for years.
"Most of these rowers use lightweight, sliding-seat rowing shells, which are very fast. Others prefer the stability and seaworthiness of traditional fixed-seat rowing boats. Either way, rowing is a meditative, low-impact, full-body exercise that can be done on the water by people of all ages and abilities," Kirchoff said.
Kirchoff and fellow rower Ron Flint are asking anyone interested in recreational rowing to call them. Kirchhoff is at 586-5816 and Flint is at 789-0839. They will send out a survey to help in their research.
