Paul McCarthy's letter (Assessing the debate, Oct. 23) asked us to support Fran Ulmer because she is not as bad as Sen. Frank Murkowski. Instead of voting against a candidate, I am excited to vote for the Green Party's Diane Benson, because she believes what I believe.
Assessing the debate
There can be no doubt that Fran Ulmer is more liberal than Frank Murkowski, but if you believe that the Arctic Refuge should not be drilled, or that Alaska should not be the base for a new arms race with National Missile Defense, what exactly are you winning if Fran wins? Both Fran and Frank want to drill in the refuge and continue our addiction to oil. They both welcome Star Wars missiles to Alaska. Their million-dollar campaigns show once again why we need publicly funded elections to bring our democracy back into the hands of the people.
I am only 31 years old and I do not want to spend the rest of my life voting for candidates that I dislike least. Instead, I have chosen to take a more difficult path, that of trying to build a new alternative - The Green Party. Like the anti-slavery, women's suffrage and civil rights movements, it may take a long time.
Yet, I know that if I support a candidate only because they are not as bad as the other candidate, then I will be stuck with the same lack of choice for the next 50 years.
I will vote for Diane Benson and the other Green Party candidates because our democracy needs more voices and a real alternative. I urge you to do the same.
Co-chair, Green Party of Alaska
