Red Raiders and Tigers finish the season with titles

Maka lifts Tigers to Junior Division championship

It took extra time to decide, but the Tigers toppled the Hawkeyes 6-0 in overtime Saturday to win the Juneau Youth Football League Junior

Defense proved the game's theme as neither squad scored in the first four quarters.

In overtime, the Tigers finally broke through. Wepi Maka scored on a 1-yard touchdown to give the Tigers the championship.


Red Raiders 13, Cougars 8

The Red Raiders overcame an early first-quarter deficit to defeat the regular-season champion Cougars on Saturday for the Senior Division title.

Ben Hotch scored both of the Red Raiders' touchdowns and Steven Costello added a one-point conversion.

Hotch scored on a 2-yard run and Costello's conversion put the Red Raiders ahead 7-0 early in the first quarter.

The Cougars responded later in the quarter, however, as Randy Segelhorst found the end zone on a 9-yard run. Chris Hoffman then gave the Cougars the lead by hauling in a two-point conversion pass from Chris Holloway.

The Cougars maintained an 8-7 lead at halftime, but Hotch put the Red Raiders on top for good in the third quarter. Hotch rumbled 50 yards to the end zone to put his team ahead.

The Red Raiders' defense did the rest, holding the Cougars scoreless for the remainder of the game.

Costello was named player of the game in the win.
