Michael Wagner was holding a gun shortly after 8 p.m. Monday night that fired, striking Steven Key, 48, in the head.

Wagner told police he was showing Key the gun when it discharged. Wagner immediately called 911.

Key was pronounced dead at the scene. Wagner was taken to the Anchorage Jail. His bail was set at $50,000.

The shooting took place at a mother-in-law cabin behind a main residence in the Mountain View neighborhood on Anchorage's northeast side. Key lived in the main house and had rented the cabin to Wagner, police said.

Police department spokesman Lieutenant Paul Honeman said Wagner was "very distraught" after the shooting but cooperated with officers.

Neighbor Nancy Manilay was nursing her 2-week-old baby and heard the shot.

"It was one big gunshot," she said.
