Robert 'Bob' James Austin

Former longtime Juneau resident Robert "Bob" J. Austin, 81, died Oct. 13, 2003, in Roseburg, Ore.

He was born Jan. 3, 1922, in Norwalk, Ohio, to Thomas Morrow and Grace (Dillingham) Austin. He graduated from Norwalk High School in 1940 and in 1941 he joined the U.S. Navy. On Oct. 6, 1953, he married his wife of 50 years, Norma Fisher in Roseburg, Ore.

He worked as a journeyman plumber in Ohio and Oregon. In 1970 he moved his family to Juneau, where he owned and operated Glacier Plumbing and Heating. He also spent several seasons commercial fishing on his boat the Vindicator. After retiring, he and his wife moved to Roseburg, where he pursued his favorite hobbies, gardening and woodworking.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and a sister.

He is survived by his wife, Norma; sons, Dennis and his wife Linda of Roseburg, Brad and his wife Carol of Juneau; grandchildren Jamie, Annie and Robbie of Roseburg, and Kate and Lyman of Juneau; three sisters, a brother, and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial services were held Oct. 18 in Roseburg, Ore.
